    Karena Dawn Allen, 46, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2022, at IU Health West Hospital in Avon.

    Born April 18, 1975, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Larry and Penny (Hicks) Ashcraft. Karena married Roy Allen in 2013.

    Karena was a graduate of Ivy Tech and a sales associate. She enjoyed her work and loved her dogs. Karena was of the Christian faith.

    Survivors include her husband, Roy Allen, of Oolitic; children, Derrick (Shaily Saucerman) Eisele of Mitchell, Devin Jamison of Mitchell, and Linda (Zane Parks) Jamison of Mitchell, and stepson, Clayton Allen of Columbus; mother and stepfather, Penny and Alan Pridemore of Mitchell; father and stepmother, Larry and Carolyn Ashcraft; grandchildren, Kharsin Eisele, Kolten Eisele, Hadleigh Eisele, and Nova Phelps; sister, Teri Lewis of Ball Ground, Georgia; stepbrother, Jason Pridemore of Bedford; and stepsister, Amber Pridemore of Mitchell.

    Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 10, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Pastor Dwight Dunbar officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

    The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday and from 9:30 a.m. until the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

    Karen Dawn is an American animal rights and welfare advocate and writer. She's known as the founder of DawnWatch, author of “Thanking the Monkey: Rethinking the way we Treat Animals,” and for numerous newspaper and magazine pieces, as well as for her well-publicized turkey rescues.[2]

    Karen Dawn was born in the United States and grew up and was schooled in Australia. She studied at the University of New South Wales, earning a science degree with a major in psychology. Dawn had her first experience working with the media as a news researcher and writer for Australia's national nightly news magazine show The 7.30 Report, on ABC.[3] Dawn moved to New York City and pursued her interest in music throughout the early 1990s as a singer-songwriter. In 1999 she moved to Los Angeles and founded DawnWatch – the Daily Animal World News Watch – which became a nonprofit organization in 2016. She spent two decades in Pacific Palisades where she became known as the Turkey Lady for her well-publicized Thanksgiving turkey rescues. She left for Santa Barbara in early 2020. She is now based largely in Austin Texas.[4]
